How to Plan an Office Move Without an IT Outage

Marcus Webb, Field Services Lead · April 10, 2026 · 5 min read

Office moves fail in IT for a predictable reason: the network gets treated as a moving-day task instead of a project with its own timeline.

Start with connectivity, weeks ahead — new ISP circuits can take longer to provision than the move itself, and this is the item most likely to blow the schedule if left late.

Map the new floor plan for access points and cable runs before moving day, not during it. Coverage dead zones are far easier to fix on paper than after desks are bolted down.

Stage and label hardware in advance: servers, switches, and printers should be pre-configured and tested off-site wherever possible, so the on-site window is installation, not troubleshooting.

Plan the cutover window deliberately — usually a weekend — with a rollback plan if the new circuit or hardware isn't ready in time.

Finally, budget a few days of light onsite presence after the move for the inevitable small issues: a monitor that didn't survive the move, a port that needs re-patching, a printer that needs a driver reinstalled.
