How to Keep Your Business Running Through Power Outages

Every business we work with in Accra and Kasoa has dealt with it: the power drops mid-workday, and suddenly nobody can access the server, the router's down, and whatever wasn't saved is gone. It's one of the most common — and most preventable — sources of lost work we see.

The first layer of protection is a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) on anything that can't tolerate a sudden shutdown: your router, your main server or NAS, and at minimum the desktop your team relies on most. A UPS won't run your office for hours, but it buys you the ten minutes you need to save work and shut down cleanly instead of losing files to a hard power cut.

The second layer is a generator or solar setup sized for how long your outages actually run, not how long you wish they ran. This is worth planning deliberately rather than buying whatever's available the week after a bad outage — undersized generators that trip under load are a common and frustrating result of last-minute purchases.

The third layer, and the one people skip most often, is making sure your data and access don't live only on hardware sitting in the office. Cloud backups and cloud-hosted email or file storage mean that even if your office loses power for a day, your team can keep working from a laptop on battery and a phone hotspot — the business keeps moving even if the building doesn't have power.

Internet redundancy matters too. A backup mobile data router or a second ISP connection is inexpensive insurance against the outage that takes out your primary fibre line along with the power.

None of this needs to be solved all at once. Start with a UPS on your critical hardware and a real backup of your important files somewhere off-site — that alone covers most of the actual damage a power cut can do. The rest can be layered in as the business grows.
