Does Your Business Need to Register with Ghana's Data Protection Commission?

The Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843) has been on the books for over a decade, but enforcement and awareness have picked up in recent years — and a lot of small and mid-sized businesses still don't realize it applies to them.

If your business keeps any structured personal data — a customer database, an employee list with contact and ID details, a CRM, even a spreadsheet of client contacts — you're very likely a "data controller" under the Act, and data controllers are generally required to register with the Data Protection Commission (DPC). The registration window after you start processing personal data is commonly cited at around 20 days, which is easy to miss if nobody on the team is explicitly watching for it.

The good news is that registration itself is procedural, not a huge lift. The harder part — and the part that actually protects you and your customers — is having reasonable practices in place: knowing what personal data you hold, who can access it, how long you keep it, and what happens if a laptop with customer data goes missing.

This is where compliance and IT security overlap in practice. Access controls, encrypted backups, and a basic incident response plan aren't just good security hygiene — they're also exactly what a regulator or a concerned customer will ask about if something goes wrong.
